Chickpea is the basic ingredient for Hummus, a food dip or spread made from cooked, mashed chickpeas, blended with tahini, olive oil, lemon juice, salt and garlic. Hummus is one of the oldest foods known in the world. It originated over 7000 years ago and is becoming increasingly popular among many populations in the world. Hummus is the Arabic word for chickpea, also known as the Garbanzo bean.

Traditional Hummus

Preparing traditional Hummus is a time-consuming process. First you need to soak the dry chickpeas overnight for 10 to 12 hours in fresh water with salt or soda. Then the chickpeas have to boil steadily for two hours. Finally you can use them for preparing the hummus according to your own recipe.
